This year, Karen and I are excited to be back at the Madison County Farmer’s Market in Richmond, KY. We learned a lot last year since it was our very first market, and we’re making a few changes to our setup.
First, we’re changing the name of our jams and jellies. Instead of “The Ellis Inn,” they will now be called “Jams and Jellies from Bent Tree Acres.”
Karen thought the old name was confusing—people even asked how to make a reservation at the Ellis Inn! We started using that name as a fun nickname when we moved into our little home, but now it’s time for a change.
We picked “Bent Tree Acres” because a strong windstorm last year bent one of our trees all the way over to 90 degrees. It’s now a unique, permanent part of our farm.

Last year, our jams and jellies were a big hit. Almost all of the berries we used came from our own 3 acres, except for some strawberries we got from another vendor. Our Strawberry Jalapeno jam was especially popular, but our customers loved all the flavors.
Selling Embroidered Items At the Farmer’s Market
We’re also selling items from our embroidery business, Ellistrations. We started Ellistrations back in 2001 by making music-themed embroidered hats and shirts that were loved all over the world. This season, we will also have embroidered hats, hand towels, handbags, and other special embroidered items.
Selling embroidered hats and shirts at the farmer’s market has been an interesting experience. One thing I’ve learned is that music-themed designs aren’t moving as quickly as I’d hoped. I think it’s because I’ve been trying to appeal to a wide audience, and the interest just isn’t there.
However, I did sell a few area code hats with 859 on them, which was encouraging. But the real winners have been my minimalist black and white hats. Since I’m working with black hats, I’ve been stitching the designs in white thread, and the contrast really makes them stand out.
One of my best sellers so far has been my Nessie Craft Beer hat—it sold quickly! Another design that got a lot of attention was my “Squatch Life” hat. I sold quite a few of those, which tells me that people love a good Bigfoot-themed design.

It’s always interesting to see what catches people’s eye. As I keep refining my designs, I’m learning more about what customers really want. I’m excited to keep experimenting and finding the next big seller!
This year, we’re adding some new items to our shop, like lighted jars and tote bags! Since we can make these as we go, we might have fresh designs and new items for you to check out each week.

The Madison County Farmer’s Market opens on May 3rd, 2025, and will be open from 9 AM to 1 PM. We’re excited to see everyone there! Karen and I always enjoy meeting new people and chatting with those who stop by our booth.
Hope to see you soon!
